The In-Between
About Page
The In-Between started because so much of the writing around health was missing the point. Click-baity listicles dominate the sphere, promising everything for nothing: “How I Lost 115 Pounds and Learned to Love Again by Eating Pinenuts.”
Or trolling you with alerts from this very dangerous world: “The 3 Things You Didn’t Know about Yoga Pants That Could Kill You!”
Sometimes (okay, most of the time) I didn’t want to learn about a new life hack; I wanted to hear what it felt like for another human being to be in the uncomfortable middle: not yet healed, not yet a success, the big life questions still unresolved. How do we make good use of the rest of our lives assuming perfection is off the table?
On the subject of spirituality, I wanted to move out of my comfort zone and I wanted to laugh, as well. I wanted more than vague, affirming statements that might pull you in, but offer no path or process to follow. The Power of Positive Thinking was not going to cut it. People get sick; it’s not always their fault.
So I started The In-Between which arrives in your inbox once a week: thoughtful, short, and funny. It’s what I always wanted in my inbox – something to remind me of what’s important, to educate and challenge me, and help me feel more connected to others on the path.
Will I Like It?
I certainly hope so. I’m putting a lot of effort, experience, and heart into it. Here’s what some readers have said:
“Thank you…There is so much of it I recognize in myself, and I commend your candor in sending your thoughts and experiences out into the world. This was one of the best reads I've had in 2019. “ – Ruth, Researcher
“I just did something I rarely do - read something from top to bottom. Thank you for writing and sharing a very personal and vulnerable piece. We all have things that we may be ashamed of or wish were different, and try to hide from the outside world. Knowing I’m not alone in this helps me to find compassion for myself. “ – Katya, Journalist
“Brilliant!”– Jack S., Neurosurgeon
“As the father of a one year old, an Alexander [Technique] trainee, and someone with similar challenges and concerns you’ve so beautifully described, I needed this. “– Steven, Teacher and father

But Who’s Talking?
I’m a former journalist who, after a profound injury, studied the Alexander Technique to heal, and has spent 15+ years as a Buddhist meditator and teacher. I’ve gained a lot of ground in my health but am still unable to type (everything is dictated – ta da!). I played collegiate water polo but after my injury, I had to re-learn how to swim using the Alexander Technique and I now teach a form of sustainable and alignment-focused swim instruction called the Art of Swimming. I have two daughters and live in an aging home in the Hudson Valley littered with small toys. Though it should never be Googled, I did once win The Newlywed Game TV show.
